Animal soul project: acabado con encáustica (beeswax finish)

Sigo con más información y más detalles sobre el acabado con encáustica.

Los primeros trabajos del nuevo proyecto «Animal soul» los he realizado con esta técnica.

I follow with more information and more details on the finish with beeswax. The first works of Animal soul new project are made with this finish.

Una vez terminado el collage, aplico la cera caliente y líquida con un pincel. Para calentar la cera, lo ideal es algún tipo de olla eléctrica no demasiado grande, con termostato para controlar la temperatura. En mi caso, lo que encontré fue un calentador de biberones y me va muy bien. El pincel sólo ha de ser para ese uso, ya que queda inservible para pintar.

Si los desniveles (debidos al grosor  de los papeles del collage) son fuertes, hay que aplicar más cera en ellos para que quede una capa final nivelada.

Once the collage is finished, apply hot liquid wax with a brush. To heat the wax, ideally some kind of not too large crockpot with thermostat to control the temperature. In my case, what I found was a bottle warmer and it’s going very well. The brush must be only for that use, as it is useless to paint. If the slopes (due to the thickness of collage papers) are strong, apply more wax in them to make it a final layer level.

Con la ayuda de una pequeña plancha, voy puliendo la cera para que quede en una capa uniforme. Hay que tener en cuenta que si la temperatura está demasiado alta, deshace la cera, no la «pule». La presión también es importante, porque intento evitar que queden marcas o surcos demasiado profundos. Aunque puede usarse como recurso y jugar con las texturas.

La plancha que utilizo es de patchwork, concretamente esta. Aunque puede servir cualquier plancha que sea pequeña y manejable y que no tenga orificios para el vapor.

With the help of a mini iron, I polish wax to make it in a uniform layer. Keep in mind that if the temperature is too high, the wax melts, not «polish». The pressure is also important, because I try to avoid streaks or grooves too deep. Although it can be used as a resource and play with textures. I use this patchwork mini iron. While it can serve any iron that is small and manageable and has no steam holes.

Sobre fondos oscuros la cera destaca más. También es más visible, cuánto mayor sea la capa de cera que apliquemos.

Para aprender otros recursos y profundizar sobre el collage con encáustica, os recomiendo el libro «Collage discovery workshop» de Claudine Hellmuth. Yo lo tengo y resulta bastante interesante. Aunque hay muchos otros que seguro que también lo son. Os animo a investigar ;D

On dark backgrounds wax out more. It is also more visible, how much higher the wax layer that we apply.
To learn about other resources and deepen the collage with encaustic, I recommend the book «Collage Discovery Workshop» by Claudine Hellmuth. I have it and it is quite interesting. Although there are certainly many others are too. I encourage you to investigate ;D

«People & city, the making off»

Acabar este collage me llevó bastante tiempo, debido a sus grandes dimensiones  (90 x 70 cm) y a que utilicé casi exclusivamente acrílicos, con capas muy finas casi como veladuras, en las partes del fondo, cielo y edificios.

Pero el intenso trabajo mereció la pena, ya que estoy contenta con el resultado final. Pretendía conseguir un fondo muy difuso, de aspecto envejecido en alto contraste con las caras de los habitantes de la ciudad y creo que se puede apreciar ese efecto.

I spent a long time making this painting, due its large size and due my painting process, many thin layers of acrylic, as veiling for the sky and buildings. But the hard work was worth it, I’m satisfy with this painting. 

I wanted to get a very diffuse background, aged appearance in high contrast with the faces of city’s people and I think you can see that effect.
